Section Three
Timothy’s Faith
The New Testament contains two letters from Paul to Timothy. Paul calls
Timothy his ‘son’ several times.
At the start of the second letter, there are a few verses where Paul says that
he prays for Timothy all the time. Paul wishes that he could get to see
Timothy, expecting that such an encounter would be ‘filled with joy’.
Paul then says that he is reminded of Timothy’s ‘sincere faith’. He says that
this faith can be traced back to Timothy’s grandmother (Lois) and to
Timothy’s mother (Eunice). Paul says that he believes that the same faith
that was in Lois and Eunice is now in Timothy - three generations of the
same family.
Timothy’s faith, whilst personal to him, has its roots in his grandmother.
Later, Paul encourages Timothy to be thankful of this.
