The Mark of the Covenant -

Circumcision

The covenant given to Abraham included a physical sign - that of circumcision. The story and the instructions given by God to Abraham are recorded in Genesis Chapter 17. • Verses 1 and 2: Abraham was 99 years old, God promises to make a covenant with him to ‘greatly increase your numbers’ as long as Abraham is faithful and blameless • Verses 3 to 8: God establishes the covenant with Abraham using a change of name (Abram to Abraham). God promises to give the land of Canaan to Abraham’s descendants • Verses 9 to 14: God says that part of this covenant is that every eight- day old boy is to be circumcised throughout the future generations • Verses 15 to 22: God says to Abraham that his wife is to change her name from Sarai to Sarah and that they are to have a child named Isaac • Verses 23 to 27: Abraham (who was 99), his son Ishmael (who was 13) and all the male members of his household were circumcised that day Circumcision became a symbolic way to distinguish between Jews and Gentiles.
