Section Eight

Paul and Timothy

In the Bible there are two letters that Paul wrote to Timothy. There is also reference to Timothy in the first letter to the Corinthians. Within these, Timothy is called a ‘son’ or ‘child’ - obviously not meant literally. 1. Paul has sent Timothy to the Corinthians. Paul uses the analogy of being a father to them, and of Timothy being his son. 2. In writing to Timothy, Paul reminds him of the grace that has been shown to him and called Timothy his son. 3. In the introduction of his second letter to Timothy, Paul again called him a son. 4. Paul encourages Timothy (again ‘my son’) to live in the grace that has been shown to him.
