Lot’s Daughters
Lot was Abraham’s nephew. By the time of Genesis Chapter 19, he was
married with two daughters. Both daughters were pledged to be married to
men who were living in the city of Sodom.
Lot, his wife and his daughters are led by angels out of the city of Sodom
just before it is destroyed. They flee and eventually settle in mountains,
where they lived in a cave.
The daughters are noted saying that there are no men for them to have
children. They say that this is the ‘custom all over the earth’.
So the daughters hatch an extraordinary plan. They decide to get Lot drunk
and sleep with him.
This works - both daughters become pregnant. Their sons go on to have
descendants that later become nations - the Moabites and the Ammonites.
This shows that even extraordinary things were done to preserve the family
line.
