Section Seventeen

Jesus’ Childhood

The gospels mention little of the childhood of Jesus.

Matthew

Before Jesus’ birth, including an angel speaking to Joseph (Chapter 1 verses 18 to 24) The magi visit Jesus (Chapter 2 verses 1 to 12) Mary, Joseph and Jesus escape to Egypt (Chapter 2 verses 13 to 18) They return from Egypt to live in Nazareth (Chapter 2 verses 19 to 23) Both Mark and John have nothing of either Jesus’ birth or his childhood.

Luke

Angel Gabriel visits Mary (Chapter 1 verses 26 to 38) Mary visits Elizabeth and a song of Mary is recorded (Chapter 1 verses 39 to 56) Jesus is born, shepherds visit, angels appear (Chapter 2 verses 1 to 20) On the eighth day Jesus is circumcised (Chapter 2 verse 21) Jesus is presented in the temple (Chapter 2 verses 22 to 40) When Jesus was 12, he stays behind in Jerusalem and is found in the temple courts (Chapter 2 verses 41 to 52)
