Section Six
Jesus and Children Hearing from God
Matthew has an account of the events that we now celebrate on Palm
Sunday. Jesus makes his way into Jerusalem for the final time to crowds who
shouted his praise.
Once in Jerusalem, Matthew records that Jesus went to the temple courts
and drove out those who were changing money and those who were selling
doves.
He then heals some blind and lame people. Children see this and shout
‘Hosanna to the Son of David’. This meant that they acknowledged Jesus for
who he was.
When the chief priests and teachers of the law heard what the children were
shouting, they became upset. Jesus then quotes a Psalm to confirm that the
children were indeed right in their praise and their praise was inspired by
God.
Children could see that Jesus was God, and declared this in their praise.
They saw what the religious authorities could not.
This brings to mind some other words of Jesus. He praises God because God
has chosen to keep things hidden from the ‘wise and learned’ and yet has
revealed them to ‘little children’.
In the Bible
Matthew’s account of Jesus entering Jerusalem is in
Matthew Chapter 21 verses 1 to 17.
The children shouting out is in verse 15 and Jesus
quotes from Psalm 8 verse 2 in verse 16.
The accounts of Jesus praising God because he has
revealed things to children are found in:
•
Matthew Chapter 11 verses 25 and 26
•
Luke Chapter 10 verse 21
Jesus and Psalm 8
If you look up Psalm 8 verse 2 and Jesus’ quote of it
in Matthew Chapter 21 verse 16 you will see that
there are differences.
This is because Jesus is quoting from a Greek
translation of the Hebrew that the Psalm was
originally written in.
