Honour Your Father and Mother

There are a number of verses that contain the command to ‘honour your father and mother’. This command occurs as part of the ten commandments, so was considered alongside other instructions about how the household was to function. Jesus condemns the Pharisees for not living up to the commandment. He quotes it as one of the commandments that should be kept when a rich man asks him about inheriting eternal life. There are two other rules that are included in the Old Testament law: 1. Anyone who attacks their father or mother is to be put to death (see Exodus Chapter 21 verse 15) 2. Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death (see Exodus Chapter 21 verse 17 and Leviticus Chapter 20 verse 9)
