Section Five

A Part of the Covenant

A key theme of the Old Testament is covenant. A covenant was an agreement between two or more people and was usually about agreeing how one or both parties would act in the future. The Old Testament has a number of covenants between God and individuals (for example, Abraham and David). When this happened, a special relationship was created. Many see the whole Old Testament law as part of a covenant between God and the Israelites. A number of verses show that children were a part of this covenant. Deuteronomy Chapter 29 verses 9 to 11 show that children were a part of the covenant. Isaiah Chapter 59 verse 21 also says that the covenant was intended for future generations. Ezekiel Chapter 37 verse 25 says how God’s covenant will be lived out through future generations. Also, Isaiah points to a child being the end point in fulfilling the covenant promise. Isaiah Chapter 9 verse 6 is often read at Christmas as a verse that points to Jesus. The section in Isaiah is about how God will turn darkness to light and fulfil the covenant promise through a child. Isaiah Chapter 11 verse 6 has a similar theme. The covenant will be played out through the line of Jesse and a ‘little child will lead them’.

Covenant

Covenant is also a key theme throughout the Bible. The fact that the Bible is split into the Old and New Testaments shows how key the theme of covenant is to the Biblical message. Indeed, some argue that covenant is the key theme of the Bible.
